I was privileged to be the Head Teacher at Penponds before I retired 20 years ago and am delighted to be back at school again as a governor!
As a teacher I enjoyed working with children of all ages, especially in small primary schools, because schools such as Penponds always work closely and positively with the community and make sure that children grow in a healthy and safe environment. It really is true that “it takes a village to raise a child”!
Since leaving Penponds I have worked as an Early Years Assessor and Mentor, and now enjoy organising Rotary Youth Speaks competitions in primary and secondary schools throughout Cornwall and Devon. It is always rewarding to see children taking part and gaining in confidence. Teams from Penponds have been highly successful and won the competition many times!
As an organiser of Camborne Music Festival, I have been delighted to see children from Penponds taking part and enjoying the experience of singing together in front of appreciative audiences.
I really enjoy reading and had to buy a new bookcase recently because I have so many books! I especially love reading books with children, and the school website has given me lots of suggested titles to read with children, as well as suggestions of books for me to read about children and education.
I am pleased to be back at school and look forward to working with everyone to fulfil the Penponds Promise; that all children will be given the opportunities to thrive, grow in confidence and be happy, so that they “aim high and achieve their best.”

Hi, I’m Katy, I have a little boy at Penponds School and we have lived in the local village for many years.
Whilst I do not have an education background, I hope to bring a different angle to the Governing body here at Penponds and be able to support this wonderful school, the incredible staff and fantastic pupils as best as I can.
I am proud to be part of this of brilliant MAT in my role as Funding Governor (Pupil Premium, Sports Premium and Recovery/NTP) and Attendance Governor.
Reading - In our house, we love to do bedtime reading each night and some of our favourite books to enjoy together are these classics from Julia Donaldson.
Mrs Sarah Davis
Co-opted Governor
Hi my name is Sarah Davis. I am married with three children. Our youngest daughter was a pupil at Penponds and I now have two granddaughters who went to the school. I became a co-opted governor in 2016. My main area of responsibility is Literacy. I have a passion for books and reading. I have a BSc hons degree in Combined Social Science. I have worked as an aim higher ambassador for Plymouth University and Cornwall College. I have also worked as a Youth worker for Cornwall Council taking a youth bus to rural villages and a heritage camp with Cornish and Breton teenagers. I was also part of a pilot scheme e-mentoring year 9 pupils. I am passionate about education and equal opportunities for all children.
Penponds Primary School Local Governing Body
Our governing body was re-constituted on April 1st 2014 when we converted to an academy and became part of the Rainbow Multi-Academy Trust – five schools committed to working together to improve learning, outcomes and life chances for all children. The other schools in our MAT are Penponds Primary, St Meriadoc CE Infant Academy, St Meriadoc CE Junior Academy and St Ives Infant Academy.

Functions of the Governing Body
The three core strategic functions are:
- Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
- Seeking the views of the stakeholders.
What do our governors do?
The Local Governing Body is a team of people made up of parents, staff and people from the local community. All of us serve the school by providing overall strategic leadership and management. The governors are ultimately responsible for ensuring that every child gets the best possible education at Penponds Community Primary School.
All of our governors are incredibly committed volunteers and their key function is to ensure that children enjoy school and make good progress. They check that the school is making the best use of its resources, monitor the budget and help to make key decisions.
To ensure they are well informed governors visit school regularly and carry out a variety of monitoring tasks which include: meeting with subject leaders, spending time in lessons, talking with children, looking at children’s work, listening to readers, looking at the learning environment, checking data, championing vulnerable groups and attending special events.
Governors also attend training to make sure they are fully up to date with their statutory duties, new legislation and curriculum developments.
